There are many good resources for further reading about children, health care, parenting, etc. There are also many resources that are not so good. It is not always easy to tell the ones to keep and the ones to disregard. See Evaluating Medical Information for more on this.
For general information on health, growth and development, and parenting issues, I like a book series (available at the office - ask the receptionist) written by committee from the American Academy of Pediatrics. These are not always relaxed reading, but they are good general reference books. Each title has a chief editor:
And speaking of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the AAP web site includes resources and information for parents.
There are many, many Web pages on pediatric topics. A catalog of good ones was maintained by Johns Hopkins University. This is the Harriett Lane Site in the state of transition, but you can still access many good, reliable, child health topics through this portal.
A very good, consumer friendly, review of information on immunizations, the science behind immunizations, and discussions of concerns about immunizations, can be found at The Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Located at the Humboldt County Library (1313 Third St in Eureka) is the Kris Kelly Health Information Center which is an excellent local resource for getting information on health matters. The folks there have, or can get, current books or journal information, or help with Internet and other computer resources.
Also locally, St. Joseph/Redwood Memorial Hospitals ,Mad River Community Hospital and The Humboldt Del North Medical Society have web sites with local resources. The NorthCoast Clinics Network has a number of local clinic members and services.
If you have questions about information you find at any of the above sites or otherwise, please let us hear from you.
