Updates on Our Move
This
page updates what we know for sure about our move from Sunny Brae to
McKinleyville. For background on why we are moving see We're
MOVING! Important CHANGES!
1
May 2007 - We
are working closely with the Open Door Clinic to detail our needs for clinic
space and to recruit a new pediatrician . . . or two.
10
May 2007 - We
will be located in the suite adjoining the McKinleyville Community Health
Center at 1644 Central Ave. That is physically located behind North Valley Bank
on the west side of Central Avenue, between School Road and Sutter Road, on the
south side of McKinleyville.
15
May 2007 -
Plans for remodeling the new clinic space for us are in the final stages before
going to the contractor.
10
June 2007 -
It's a done deal. We
will be called: Ted Humphry, M.D./MCHC (Mckinleyville Community Health Center) Pediatrics. The address is: 1644 Central
Avenue, Suite A.
15
June 2007 -
Remodeling of our new suite has been underway since about the 10th of June.
There are not many walls to move, but there are a lot of cabinets, counters,
shelving, computer terminals and phone jacks to install.
21
June 2007 -
The projected first day of operation of Ted Humphry, M.D./MCHC Pediatrics at
the new suite in McKinleyville is Monday, the 6th of August. The date is
subject to change. We will see only urgent problems at the Sunny Brae office a
few days before we move.
21
June 2007 -
After Ted Humphry, M.D./MCHC Pediatrics opens, the office on Bayside Road in
Sunny Brae will be closed. ALL patients
seen at the Sunny Brae office are invited to be seen at Ted Humphry, M.D./MCHC
Pediatrics. You'll
hear and see the same familiar voices and faces in McKinleyville you have
experienced at the Sunny Brae office.
21
June 2007 -
After Ted Humphry, M.D./MCHC Pediatrics opens, I will continue to work Monday
and Wednesday mornings at the Open Door Clinic in Arcata. Patients I see at ODC
have the choice of continuing to be seen in Arcata or moving to the new suite
in McKinleyville.
30
June 2007 -
Perhaps the biggest difference between the way our office has operated and the
way it will operate after August 6th will be seen in the evening or on
weekends. When phone calls come in after hours, there will be a nurse
practitioner (NP) or physician's assistant (PA), experienced in pediatric care,
to answer calls from parents. There will always be a pediatrician available (often me) to back up the NP
or PA, and to handle hospital calls. I am writing a memo to the PAs and NPs
taking first call, outlining our general philosophy and specific reference
material we use for dealing with after hour problems in newborns, toddlers,
children, and adolescents.
30
June 2007 - A
locum (temporary) pediatrician will be here to work with me in August. He is
Dr. Rao, trained in pediatric cardiology as well as general pediatrics. We have
interviewed about a dozen prospective permanent partners on the phone, and one
has come for interviews in Humboldt County. In July we have more prospective
pediatricians coming to visit our area.
5
July 2007 -
Our new phone
number, starting August 6th, is: 839-2677. The fax is 839-2747.
21
July 2007 -
We will not see scheduled patients at the Sunny Brae office the week of July
30th to August 3rd. If you have an appointment that week, it is going to get
changed. During that week my staff and I will be moving out, training on a new
computer system, orienting to MCHC procedures, and setting up the new clinic in
McKinleyville. Patients having urgent problems the week of July 30th, will be
seen by me at the Sunny Brae office on a case by case basis, just like any
weekend. The phone (822-2441) will be routed to the answering service that
week. I will be available by pager, just like any weekend.
21
July 2007 -
Patients with appointments already scheduled after August 3rd at Sunny Brae,
will be transferred to the new computer system and will be seen as scheduled in
McKinleyville. Established patients previously seen at the Sunny Brae office
will need new charts and demographic and insurance information for a new
computer system in McKinleyville. Please allow extra time at first appointments
scheduled at Ted Humphry, M.D./McKinleyville Community Health Center Pediatrics.. Medical information from
established charts will be forwarded to the new chart automatically at the time
of the first visit. New patients, not previously seen at Sunny Brae, will be
seen as space in the schedule is available. We will be accepting MediCal and
more insurance plans than we do at Sunny Brae. Cash paying clients will be seen
and pay on a sliding scale.
21
July 2007 -
We are working hard to avoid problems, however, I anticipate there will be
glitches, delays, and kinks in the systems as my office staff and I and Dr. Rao
(temporaty pediatrician for August) and the staff at MCHC, open our new
Pediatric Clinic in McKinleyville. Please be patient with us. THANKS!

August 2007 -
We are up and running and have completed our first almost two weeks at our new
site in McKinleyville. The people at MCHC have been helpful with getting us
moved and open, but, we didn't work hard enough. There have been plenty of
glitches with a new phone system, new computers, and new procedures in a new
building. Office flow and front office routines have been much easier the
second week. We are a long way from settled. There is still stuff to put away .
. . somewhere . . . , and we want to get some murals painted an other
decorations up. There is still some moving to do too. Dr. Sri Rao, our temporary
pediatrician for August, is working out well. We are getting some additional
people to help up front and with the nurses in back. I'm confident wait time
for families and patient flow will improve with time.

March 2008
- After the first six months in
our new location, in the pediatric side of the McKinleyville Community Health
Center, things are generally running smoothly. We finally have the move behind us, and the vast majority of families we
see (I think) seem happy with our service. WeÕve hired some new people to help in the front office (see
Office Personnel.) We still need to get some murals done
and some sound dampening technology in the exam rooms. We need permanent signs on the building. We have to hire a new permanent partner or two. That task has proven to be more
difficult than expected. We have
interviewed a dozen prospects on the phone and some have visited, but all have
decided to go elsewhere. In the
meantime, we have locum (temporary) doctors. Dr. Dugan, who was with us for several months, died
unexpectedly in early February.
Our present locum is Vickie Saunders who will be with us until
mid-April. After that, . . . .
We
would like to have a Grand Opening, but we need some of the above items in
place before we are finished, and ready for a Big Party!
Ted
Humphry, M.D.
